ResCare is proud to congratulate one of our standout employees, Jamar “Barkim” Gowins, who was recognized by the Kentucky Association of Private Providers (KAPP) for his outstanding service to people with disabilities.
Serving as a direct support professional (DSP) with ResCare’s Community Alternatives-Kentucky in Elizabethtown, Gowins was named a KAPP 2017 DSP Regional Winner.
“In visiting our Kentucky operations every week, I have the privilege of meeting and talking to our most important employees, the DSPs. There are so many across the state who have committed their lives and careers to this noble work. Barkim is an example of someone who has quietly, professionally and lovingly supported people in his care for 17 years,” said Vice President of Kentucky Operations Shannon McCracken. “He is a remarkable person who advocates strongly for those without a voice and celebrates even the smallest successes as major achievements.”
“Barkim has a way with individuals he works with and cares for that puts them at ease – even in the most challenging situations,” said Mary Thompson, executive director of Community Alternatives-Kentucky Elizabethtown. “We are so proud to have him on our team.”
DSPs – also referred to as caregivers, personal care assistants, direct care or home care aides – provide daily support services for the many individuals with disabilities.
“Making a difference in people’s lives” is the best part of the job, Gowins said. “The more you do for them, it makes you feel good inside.”
