Roll on Capitol Hill

OVERLAND PARK, KS (August 21, 2013) — It’s often said that ResCare employees go the extra mile to care for the people they support. Karen Iverson, a ResCare HomeCare nurse, took this notion much further when she traveled thousands of extra miles — all the way to Washington, DC — to ensure her client Finn Bullers’ dream of helping others achieve independence became a reality.

Mr. Bullers approached Ms. Iverson with his idea to travel to Washington to lobby, in-person, the reformation of Medicare regulations that negatively impact Americans with disabilities. Without her assistance, his act of political activism wouldn’t have been possible.

During his trip, Mr. Bullers joined colleagues from the United Spinal Association to participate in a “Roll on Capitol Hill.” The three day “roll” supported several causes important to people with disabilities that would help them overcome barriers to independence. To assist this effort, Mr. Bullers supported a bill introduced by a bipartisan coalition of Congress to supply better equipment to individuals with disabilities without burdening taxpayers.

During the trip, Ms. Iverson and Mr. Bullers made a great team. Ms. Iverson’s dedication to Mr. Bullers was obvious through her consistent care.

“I was with him on Capitol Hill from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day,” Ms. Iverson said. “I only got 10 hours of sleep during the three days we were there.”

The trip was a success, and next year’s ‘roll’ is already in the works with the help of ResCare and the United Spinal Association.

“Our hats are off to this entire team,” Director of Operations/General Manager Peter Lougee, said. “We salute Mr. Finn Bullers for his courage and dedication to this cause and Ms. Iverson for her willingness to go way above and beyond to help one of the individuals we support.”

Mr. Bullers agrees that Ms. Iverson is a top notch caregiver.

“Karen, I have always admired your dedication to your job and the ability to get things done.” Mr. Bullers said. “You are a great representative for ResCare.”

Mr. Bullers met with Kansas Senator Pat Roberts’ health advisory staff to support the bill drafted by Congress that would supply better equipment for individuals with disabilities.
