Somerset resident achieves impressive weight loss

(Somerset, KY) When Billy Stephens sets off walking he has more than a destination on his mind. He is making strides toward weight loss, a healthy lifestyle and greater independence.
Two years ago, weighing over 400 pounds, Mr. Stephens began a weight-loss regime and has slimmed to 241 pounds.
"I walk, exercise, and don't eat too much," Mr. Stephens said of how he achieved his impressive 160-plus pound weight loss.
Mr. Stephens, who receives services from Community Alternatives Kentucky - Somerset, follows a healthy 2,000-calorie diet, eats smaller portions and walks for exercise. He regularly treads the mall, Wal-Mart, yard sales and flea markets.
Careful meal planning, purchasing healthy foods and helpful support staff are the keys to Mr. Stephens's success.
"He has some really good staff who have worked with him and kept him focused on the goal of keeping motivated to lose," said Sean Brennan, case manager. "He knew he would feel better physically, and when he started losing the weight he felt better about himself."
According to Mr. Brennan, Mr. Stephens enjoys greater mobility, is no longer easily winded and is more self-reliant.
Mr. Stephens is now able to perform daily tasks such as putting on his shoes and socks without staff assistance. A recent physical exam found him in good health. Just two years ago he was considered obese.
Mr. Stephens advises people trying to lose weight to follow his plan: "I would tell them to walk, and exercise and not eat too much."
