'I made it!'

By Karen Lasley

(Valdosta, GA) Sam Chambers and Gaines Pittman like to read and it shows. Both men, who receive supports through Normal Life - Valdosta, participate in the Adult Literacy program at Valdosta Technical College. After completing the introductory level of the program, Mr. Chambers and Mr. Pittman were honored for their academic gains and advanced to the next level of their class.

Mr. Chambers and Mr. Pittman received certificates for their accomplishments at an awards ceremony. "Yeah, I made it," said Mr. Pittman when asked how he felt about his achievement.

In addition to this accomplishment, Mr. Chambers works as a grounds attendant at Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta. "I am happy to get this far," said Mr. Chambers.

"The people at Wild Adventures just love him," said Cheryl Lowe, program manager. "He moved out of a group home into a small home of his own. A host home provider comes each evening to spend the night. He is doing wonderfully."

Initially, Mr. Chambers and Mr. Pittman were among the few individuals from Normal Life who attended the literacy program. Now several other people who receive supports through Normal Life also attend. Both Mr. Chambers and Mr. Pittman plan to participate in their courses until they complete all the levels offered.
